The late Jim Rohn, one of the best speakers of his generation once said that you are the average of the five people that you spend the most time with. He alluded to the fact that who we are as people is a result of the influence on our lives by other people in our circles.
So when you think about your life you can surely point to certain people that have made a certain contribution or investment in you. Most of this happens subconsciously by the way, we are easily influenced as human beings to behave in certain ways depending on the environment.
Instead of letting anyone and everyone direct your behavior why not learn to choose who you want to influence you and who you want to influence? The type of influence I’m referring to is the kind that makes a significant and positive difference in the lives of those around you.
Social influence gives you the opportunity to lead people and it’s very important that you lead them to places that will help them grow and meet their needs. Whatever the journey you undertake with the people you lead you become a key person they look to for guidance and direction.
Having said that, here are 4 ways to become a person with social influence:
1. Listen and understand
Leading people isn’t just about talking and giving orders all the time. Communication is a two way street. There has to be listening and speaking, where listening is the priority. I attended a seminar some time ago that included sessions on listening.
I discovered very quickly how much of a task it is to become a great listener. It requires consistent practice to develop the skill to truly listen to other people. Many relationships fall apart because of poor listening so learning how to do so is a worthwhile investment.
2. Touch people’s hearts
People are emotional beings! That’s something to keep in mind when dealing with people. That is how God communicates to us as well. He speaks to our hearts through the Holy Spirit. Before you can get people on board with whatever you are doing you need to first connect with them at the heart level.
“Leaders touch a heart before they ask for a hand.” ~ John C. Maxwell
When you look at the life of Jesus this is what He did with the people he ministered to during his time on earth. I would say almost half the battle is won when you connect with people which gives you the opportunity to lead them in a given direction.
3. Solve people’s problems
Ultimately people follow you because they believe that you can help them to do things they are unable to do themselves. This is where you have to demonstrate your ability to provide solutions to their problems which gives you the added benefit of credibility with people.
The happiest and richest people in the world are those that have solved the most problems for other people. The creator of Whatsapp, , found a way for people to communicate at very low rates internationally where before it was very expensive to contact friends and family across the globe. The company was eventually bought by Facebook for about $15billion.
4. Walk in Integrity
This is what will differentiate you from worldly ways. Sadly there is very few people that have a high level of integrity especially in positions of influence but that is what we need in the world today. Do not think that what you do in private does not affect you in public. You just have to look at King David to understand what I’m talking about.
“And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.” ~ Romans 12:2
For God to truly bless the work of your hands you need to walk uprightly. He is more interested in the condition of your heart than what you can do for Him. This is why the Israelites always had to consecrate themselves when God called them to do something so He could be glorified in them.
