Isn’t it surprising that in depressed environments there’s a tendency for some people to become wealthy or experience life changing breakthroughs? There are times when I couldn’t understand how it was that people would become successful in the face of massive obstacles in their path.
I then learned that such people never lack opportunities to move ahead where most others just see the obstacles. Times may have changed so it may mean also changing some things in order to stay relevant in the current environment. In this post I am going to break down to you how this is possible and encourage you to adopt the same things to get ahead in your life.
1. Assess people’s needs
Some people have the mistaken belief that in order to motivate people you have to show them how intelligent or eloquent you are. I hope you’re not that kind of person but even if you are there is hope so you shouldn’t be stressed out. You must understand that people by nature tend to think about themselves and their own interests.
There are numerous problems people are experiencing in their personal lives and for the most part they are thinking about how to get rid of those problems. To position yourself to get people’s attention you must learn their pain points and understand what they need. Empathize with their situation and show that you understand what they are going through.
“You can have everything in life you want, if you will just help other people get what they want.” ~ Zig Ziglar
Understanding people’s needs is the first step to helping you get what you want in life. The most effective way to motivate and influence people is by understanding their needs and showing that you have the ability to meet their needs or solve their problems.
Philippians 2:4-5 tells us, “Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others. Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus”
You are never going to be successful if all you look out for is yourself. Be like Jesus Christ and be the biggest servant of all. You won’t be in a position to solve every problem in the world but you can at least do something about the needs that resonate with you.
2. Assess your skills
Having assessed the needs you discovered should lead to identifying the skills that will address those needs. Do you have the problem solving skills to deal with the problems involved? Can you partner up with other people to help you and complement your own skills? When you think about it you will realize that for every problem in the world there is a relevant solution to deal with it.
You may not be cut out to deal with every problem in the world but you can deal with some of them and make a real difference. What skills do you have right now and what other skills can you develop that you believe can be valuable to you in the long term?
“Do you see a man diligent and skillful in his business? He will stand before kings; he will not stand before obscure men.” ~ Proverbs 22:29
There’s a quote by Whitney Young Jr. that says, “It is better to be prepared for an opportunity and not have one than to have one and not be prepared.” I’ve heard other guys say that it’s better to stay ready than to get ready. It pays to study trends and see where things in your industry are going.
Develop skills that may not be in demand now but will be in demand in the future. The ability to see into the future is a good advantage over the multitudes that don’t. It’s almost like the midfielder that sees the pass no one else does which leads to a goal! You will see this quality in the top professionals around the world today.
3. Identify the intersection
Now that you have an understanding of the problems people are experiencing and your skillset you now have the chance to assess what you can do going forward. It is an opportunity for you to think of the various possibilities of things you can do. If you have a team think of the synergies you can create and what you could possibly accomplish.
I have stated in other posts that you must be in love with what you do in order to do great work. So I would say the third element you should throw into the equation is passion. The intersection of the needs you identified, your skills and what you’re passionate about will give you the best indication of what you should do.
Passion provides you with the fuel to pursue a certain cause. Psychologists have stated that people will buy into you not because of what you do but why you do it. Without that aspect in your work you become average at best and do a disservice to the people you’re supposed to be a blessing to.
You may have the passion and understand the needs to be met but without the skills to solve their problems it’s pointless. You may also have the skills and passion but without an understanding of the problems to be addressed you will not be useful to anyone.
A combination of all three is the sweet spot that you’re looking for because it will give you the best chance of making a huge impact in the lives of the people that you’re serving.
4. Create your own opportunities
Last but not least, when you have a combination of passion, the right problem solving skills and an understanding of the problems to be solved you will be able to identify opportunities that you may not have realized before. Before opportunities become a reality you must first see them in your mind. Most people have a tendency to be depressed when the economy is failing. I have been like this too I admit.
Instead of being depressed you must be optimistic and understand that there are opportunities that arise in every crisis to solve problems and be rewarded in a big way. Ask God to help you see the opportunities at your disposal because He has already equipped with all the things you need to be a blessing to other people and live a great life in the process.
Fortunes are made through opportunities that people create for themselves and for the most part they are not always obvious. The obvious opportunities tend to be flooded by the masses and hence the returns are not significant. Train your mind to see opportunities and take advantage of them when you do.
