I have found that whenever I make the decision to do something meaningful pertaining to pursuing my life’s purpose is when almost from nowhere obstacles begin to arise. You may have had similar experiences in your own life and you can relate. The times when you feel like you’re on the right track then life just throws you a curve ball.
Here are some steps you can take to handle adversity when it comes your way. Also remember that no matter what you go through God has your back and overcoming adversity is dependent on you responding to it in a positive way.
1. Realize that it’s normal
Life is not always a bed of roses and there will be tough times that you will encounter at various stages of your life. Everyone in life including you and me will face rough patches but there’s hope that the tough times don’t last. They come to pass. The difference between those that make it through successfully and those that don’t is due to their response when facing adversity.
You will have a difficult time in life if you try to avoid challenges by all means necessary. Some problems can be avoided through proper planning but others will always arise. Running away from problems makes life even harder by giving up the opportunity to grow as a person.
If you embrace adversity and see it as an opportunity to become a better person life will be more bearable. Going through an internship/apprenticeship program or starting a new job can be difficult because you come across things you may have never dealt with before.
It’s just an indication that there are things you don’t know and raises your awareness to learn about them and be equipped to handle certain responsibilities going forward.
2. Sing praises to God
The default reaction for most people is to murmur, worry or cry foul when things are not going their way. The problem with that kind of reaction is that rarely does the situation get better. It tends to get worse. If you give out negative energy you will attract negative things to yourself which make you more miserable in the process.
“And when they began to sing and to praise, the Lord set ambushments against the men of Ammon, Moab, and Mount Seir who had come against Judah, and they were [self-] slaughtered” ~ 2 Chronicles 20:22
Instead of the default reaction choose to sing praises to God and see if He will not intervene in your situation. Some examples that you will find in the Bible are Paul and Silas who after being beaten up and locked up in prison sang praises to God at the midnight hour. As they sang praises an earthquake shook the prison and opened all the prison cells setting them free.
King Jehoshaphat put forward the musicians when Judah was laid siege by their enemies. Instead of them fighting their enemies their enemies destroyed each other and all they had to do was collect the plunder from their camp. Instead of being affected by your circumstances choose to affect them.
3. Stay focused on what’s important
Again it’s easy to lose sight of what you’re trying to accomplish when you’re facing adversity. When emotions are high clarity of thought tends to go down. While adversity is good to help you grow and become a better person the devil’s primary objective is to get you off course by throwing obstacles in your path.
“I don’t focus on what I’m up against. I focus on my goals and try to ignore the rest.” ~ Venus Williams
Praising God will give you peace of mind which puts you in a position to think clearly and navigate through your obstacles and still get to your desired destination. As long as you stay focussed on what you need to do and ask God to guide you the devil cannot stop you from getting there.
The devil is relentless in trying to distract you but God has promised you that no weapon fashioned against you shall prosper (Isaiah 54:17). The attacks will always be there but you have the power to overcome them and you need to remember that.
4. Declare God’s Word
God’s word in your mouth is just as powerful as God’s word in His mouth. You have the power to affect your environment by the words that come out of your mouth. You can choose to speak life or death in your situation. Choose life by declaring God’s promises over your life. It doesn’t matter what your situation looks like. God’s word overrides any and every negative situation.
As a child of God you need to understand the power that you have. You have the power to command the earth to deliver to you what you need to fulfil God’s purpose for your life. The evil we see in the world today is due in part to believers not taking the responsibility to use their influence to advance the Kingdom of God.
God has given you His word as a weapon for warfare and the power to use it effectively to establish His Kingdom rule here on earth.
5. Take action
Taking action when everything inside of you feels like it’s a waste of time can be challenging. It’s pretty easy to make declarations about what you want to achieve but ultimately it’s what you do that makes the difference. It’s challenging to continue when each time you take a step forward and life forces you two steps back.
Successful people say that when things get harder is when it’s most important to not give up on the goals and dreams God wants you to pursue. Others say life is darkest just before dawn. When you feel the weakest sometimes it’s an indicator that you’re close to achieving the desired outcome.
As long as you’re doing what God has ordained for your life you can be sure that He will come through for you at your point of need. He will never leave you nor forsake you. You can think of those moments as the devil’s attempt to throw everything he has at you to paralyse your ambition and keep you down. Once you get past that you know that you have overcome and be elevated to the next level to take on the next assignment.
