Rich Dad, Poor Dad

I came across this book for the first time several years ago just after my high school education. When I look back over the years I feel that I was very blessed to get my hands on it at a very young age. Rich Dad, Poor Dad teaches lessons about money with the goal of becoming financially successful or wealthy. The unfortunate thing is that for the most part the subject of money at a personal level is rarely taught in our schools and homes.

The author, Robert Kiyosaki, challenges conventional thinking that we should look to the government and employers for our financial security. Instead he encourages that everyone should be responsible for creating their own path to financial security. The subject of money is a sensitive topic to some people who think that money is evil; this is a lie. The Bible says, “The love of money is the root of all evil.” (1 Timothy 6:10)

I was amazed at the things I learned from the book and my perspective about money changed and over the years since then I have been doing my best to apply the lessons I learned. In one of my posts I narrate an experience about how I made money in different ways which you can find here if you missed it.

Despite popular opinion that money isn’t important, it really is important. According to some statistics I came across it is understood that 50% of marriages end in divorce and a big part of that is a result of financial problems. While money isn’t everything it does give you options in life and hence makes it that much easier.

Money enables us to be more of what we already are and do. We are able to better serve others and contribute to worthy causes when we have the resources to make those things happen. So making money is not a bad thing but a blessing so you can be in a position to help other people.
Some of the key learning points are:

  • Instead of working for money all your life you should make money work for you
  • You should build a portfolio of assets to become wealthy
  • Work to learn, do not work for money
  • Items such as your house and car are not assets
  • And more…

As Robert Kiyosaki says, the old rules of money no longer work in the present day. It would be criminal to think that a government or a pension will take care of you in your retirement. Learn the timeless principles about money that will set you up for financial success in the long term.

If everyone knew and applied these principles we would be living in a very different and more positive world today. Poverty was never and will never be part of God’s plan for your life. You were born to live abundance because He loves you. It is His desire to bless you so that you can be a blessing to other people and bring glory to His Name.

If you’re a parent read this book, understand it and get your children to read it too. It will equip them from an early age to become wealthy in the future. Get to your nearest book store or go online and place an order to get your own copy. If you have read the book we would love to hear your comments below about how it has helped you in your own life.

Be all you can be,
