Have you ever experienced so much hardship to the extent that you believed that God doesn’t care about you anymore? You are not alone! Everyone goes through such experiences and they are usually for the purpose of building our character and making us stronger. The Word of God carries this promise for you,

And the Lord, He is the One who goes before you. He will be with you, He will not leave you nor forsake you; do not fear nor be dismayed.” ~ Deuteronomy 31:8

Born to Win is a movie inspired by the real life story of Leon Terblanche, a South African based pastor whose upbringing was one of hardship and rejection that really affected him for the greater part of his childhood and early adulthood. This film review is a high level overview of his life that will inspire you to get past your own challenges.

Movie Trailer

A cycle of rejection

Abandoned by his parents at a very young age Leon gets adopted by a black lady who takes him as his own son, raising him in the township. Just when he feels things are going great he is again separated from her as well and the cycle of rejection continues.

He grows up knowing only hardship and comes to the conclusion that praying to God is pointless even though he was taught to pray when he was a child. He eventually goes to college to study teaching in the city of George where he makes friends that become very close to him.

Leon also gets a part-time job while he’s studying and works extremely hard wanting to prove himself that he can be somebody significant. Rejection normally plays out like that in people who feel rejected. At the same time he meets a lovely young lady who becomes his girlfriend.

Discovering his life purpose

Upon completing his studies Leon gets a teaching job at a school for disabled children who ironically are facing similar problems like he had while growing up. Because of his past experiences he is able to relate with the children and encourage them that they can get past their challenges.

At this point he is now married and has a child with his wife but their marriage is tested when Leon’s problems with his childhood rejection come to the fore. His behavior affects the family in a negative way and almost breaks them apart.

He continues however to be a role model to the children under his care some of whom have extremely sad stories but they find strength and hope as Leon cares for them.

A new perspective

Leon comes to a turning point in his life when he has to take his own advice. Tragedy strikes in his family and He is faced with the decision to either trust God or remain bitter towards Him. Life takes an interesting turn and He begins to see life from a new point of view. The decision he makes has a great impact on the direction of his family and the children that have been looking up to him.
