In fields like sport it’s pretty easy to identify the main influencers on the teams as demonstrated by the difference that they make when they play. These sorts of players are usually the difference between their team winning or losing. The same applies to other areas of our lives. Your role as a leader significantly affects the direction of your team.
Your biggest leadership challenge is probably finding a way to lead your team to victory in your particular sphere of influence. This could be in your family, community, the marketplace, etc. When times are tough people will look to you as a leader to provide solutions so that the whole team can win.
“But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.” ~ 1 Corinthians 15:58
Being a person that’s a big fan of sport I will make an example of one of my favorite sports people – Michael Jordan. The only reason I took some interest in basketball in my younger years was because of Michael Jordan. Watching him play for the Chicago Bulls was always a joy as he sought ways to constantly put his team in a position to win. He showed his good leadership qualities consistently over time.
“There’s no ‘I’ in team but there’s ‘I’ in win.” ~ Michael Jordan
One game that stands out for me was the crucial 5th game of the 1997 NBA Finals against Utah Jazz in which he played the entire match with a severe bout of flu. Not wanting to see his team lose the game he went ahead and played and it turned out to be one of his greatest ever performances.
Perhaps you have the same desire to lead your team to victory. Your team could be your family, workmates, service ministry at church, or any other. Believe that you have the capacity to be that kind of leader and prepare yourself to become that way.
In the book, “The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership,” John Maxwell describes the Law of Victory this way – Leaders find a way for the team to win. The great news is that we can look to our Lord Jesus Christ, the author and perfecter of our faith for ways to put our teams in winning positions. As a child of God, He is very interested in seeing you prosper and bring glory to His name. I have experienced His grace in times when I’ve needed to put the teams I lead into winning positions. He can do the same for you too.
In the difficult times is where you find the greatest opportunities to express your good leadership qualities. Times like the present when most of the economies of the world are failing, families are losing their moral fibre, people turning away from God; when you put your trust in God He will make sure that you look good so that He also looks good for His ultimate glory. So go ahead and be the leader that God has called you to be!
