“There there is no vision, the people perish: but he that keepeth the law, happy is he.” ~ Proverbs 29:18
“It’s not what you’ve got. It’s what you use that makes a difference.” ~ Zig Ziglar
In the last article we looked at the basic philosophy about goal setting and the importance of setting goals for your life. In this article I will go into detail about the basic steps that you need to take as you set goals for your own life. These steps have helped me significantly over the last couple of years and I trust that they will work for you if you apply them. There are 5 steps, as I mentioned in the previous article. Here we go:
Establish Your Position
Step 1 is to establish your current position in life. You may be asking, “Why do I have to establish my position?” Think about each time you get up from bed in the morning. One of the first things we normally do is find out what time it is, right? Why do we do that? Instinctively we want to understand what we should be doing at that time depending on whether we are up early or late. It’s human nature to want to know where we are in life even though we sometimes don’t realize it. Or consider a road trip, for example, and let’s say you fall asleep along the way. When you wake up what is the first thing that comes to mind? You got it, “Where are we?” So basically that is how we are designed, with the need to understand our starting point before we do anything else.
Determine Your Destination
When you have established your position the next step is to decide where you want to go in life. Now you have 2 points to work with – where you are, and where you want to be. When you have these 2 points the brain can start devising ways for you to get from where you are to where you want to get to. The problem with a lot of people is staying where they are in life. This is usually due to fear of the future, guilt, self-pity, depression, etc don’t let that be you. Life has its challenges and we all experience failure along the way. Moving forward requires you to learn from your mistakes and try again more intelligently. Look forward and upward. Where do you want to be in life? What do you want to achieve? Remember what the Bible says, “Brethren, I do not consider that I have made it my own; but one thing I do, forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 3:13-14) Today is a new day! Dream big and pursue the desires God has placed in your heart.
Prepare Your Plan
Remember what I shared with you in the previous article? Dreams don’t come true, goals do. Having established where you are and where you want to be the next step is laying out your plan of action to get from where you are to where you want to be. You don’t want to compare yourself with other people because we all start at different points even though we are going to the same destination. Let’s say your destination is Zimbabwe and your current location is South Africa. And let’s say that someone else also wants to get to Zimbabwe but their current location is London, England. Do you understand that getting to Zimbabwe for you will cost less than for the person traveling from London? Your plan of action will be dependent on those 2 parameters, location and destination.
In the next article I will cover the last 2 steps in the goal setting process. Once you have the basic understanding of the entire process setting and getting goals becomes something that you will begin to enjoy. Until next time,
Be all you can be!
