The movie Hacksaw Ridge is based on a true story of World War 2 hero Desmond T Doss. It had an international release in November 2016 and captivated audiences all around the world.
Hacksaw Ridge was directed by Mel Gibson and the main theme is around the power of staying true to your convictions. If you haven’t watched the movie it would be great to check it out.
Here are 8 inspirational quotes from the movie Hacksaw Ridge:
1. “I have to enlist. I can’t stay here while all of them go fight for me.” ~ Desmond Doss
Motivated by a sense of duty to his nation, Desmond Doss refused to be comfortable while others fought for America. It’s easy to look for the easy way out when faced with hard situations but it doesn’t help you. If anything, looking for the easy way out makes you weaker in the long term.
It’s a matter of choosing between convictions and convenience. While doing the right thing is initially hard, it’s more rewarding in the long term and makes you stronger. Therefore, my encouragement is that you choose to do what’s right.
2. “But I don’t know how I’m going to live with myself if I don’t stay true to what I believe.” ~ Desmond Doss
People that have a high moral standard cringe when they are tempted to violate certain principles. It’s easier for others to do what’s immoral or ungodly, and it’s due to not having strong value systems. Those who are evil, see what’s good as evil which is sad when you try to do what’s right.
In the movie, Desmond Doss refused to carry arms because he had been taught that violence doesn’t please God. You will get persecuted for standing up for moral values and it shouldn’t be surprising because Jesus faced the same.
3. “I fell in love with you because you weren’t like anyone else and you didn’t try to be.” ~ Dorothy Schutte
The love between Desmond and his wife Dorothy was beautiful to behold because they truly loved each other. None of them pretended to be something they were not and Dorothy liked that about Desmond. A mistake a lot of people often make is trying to be something they are not to please others.
When you’re not authentic, you’ll more than likely attract the wrong people and find yourself in a mess. It’s so much easier to be yourself and the people who are drawn to you, love you for who you are.
4. “It isn’t right that other men should fight and die, that I would just be sitting at home safe. I need to serve.” ~ Desmond Doss
Again, Desmond reiterated his desire to serve in the army for the good of his country. At this point, his commanding officers had tried to throw him out several times to no effect. He was brought to trial for supposed insubordination, yet he truly was within his rights to not carry a gun.
There are times when you’ll be required to bold enough to stand up for yourself and your values. When you remain silent, you give your adversaries the advantage and your ambitions get frustrated as a result.
Life doesn’t just give us what we want, sometimes we have to go out and take it.
5. “While everyone else is taking life, I’m going to be saving it.” ~ Desmond Doss
It must have seemed weird to other soldiers that Desmond wanted to do his own thing. Going to war to save lives almost seemed like an oxymoron, but Desmond was certain he could do it. Just because most other people are going a certain direction, doesn’t mean it’s the right one for you.
Your dreams and ambitions might look ridiculous to others but it doesn’t make them so. It just means you have a different path to follow to get to your destination; be fine with that.
6. “With the world so set on tearing itself apart, it doesn’t seem like such a bad thing to me to want to put a little bit of it back together.” ~ Desmond Doss
The world is corrupt and marred by so much evil, it doesn’t need any more of it. God calls us to love one another, even those that persecute us and we don’t feel like loving. One simple act of love can bring about life changing experiences to those around you. Love brings light where there is darkness, and we certainly need that in these trying times.
While Desmond was rescuing his fellow soldiers, he healed wounded Japanese soldiers as well. To him, he saw people the same and didn’t discriminate based on their nationality or affiliation. That’s the kind of love that transforms people’s lives.
7. “Please, Lord. Help me get one more. Help me get one more.” ~ Desmond Doss
As Desmond was rescuing his fellow wounded soldiers after an attack by the Japanese, he prayed to God for strength. He didn’t want to see any of them left behind if there was a chance for them getting healed. He went above and beyond the call of duty when everyone else had retreated.
That’s what a loyal and dedicated person does; they are not motivated by money or anything other than a noble and worthwhile cause. As he went up and down the escarpment, bruised and bleeding, he kept praying asking God for strength. When you’re motivated by love, you go the extra mile to do things you ordinarily wouldn’t want to do.
8. “Most of these men don’t believe the same way you do. But they believe so much in how much you believe.” ~ Captain Glover
Desmond Doss ultimately earned the respect of his captain, who had tried to get rid of him initially. Not that Desmond was trying to do so, but holding on to his conviction led to great heroics during the war. He single-handedly rescued around 75 soldiers in the most dangerous of situations where he easily could have been killed.
As a man who prayed and read his Bible, his fellow soldiers got to see first-hand the power of God at work. Standing for what’s right has a life changing impact on other people if you persevere.
