There’s so much information about finding your purpose in life today and some of it can be confusing or conflicting with personal values. It’s good to be purpose-driven but keep in mind that you must align yourself with God’s plans.
I’m going to share some resources closely related to God’s standards. You can use them to help you find your purpose in life if you haven’t discovered it already. Here are three books that you can study as you pursue that understanding.
1. The Holy Bible
It is by far the most read book in the world which is split between the Old and New Testament. The Bible from beginning to end tells the story of God’s plan for humankind.
From the book of Genesis, you learn about creation and God’s original plan for mankind before sin entered the world. The Bible is the living and active Word of God that transforms lives by moving people from darkness to light.
As you go through the Old Testament God uses numerous leaders and prophets to pursue His will. It also narrates God’s ultimate plan for restoring right relationship with Him.
This plan is fulfilled in the New Testament when God sends His one and only son Jesus Christ to die for the sins of the world. This message of salvation has been spreading around the world since the time Jesus commissioned his disciples to preach the gospel.
As you prayerfully read the Bible you will learn that God has a plan for your life; not just to save you from sin but also to accomplish great and mighty things for His Kingdom here on earth.
2. The Pursuit: 14 Ways in 14 Days to Passionately Seek God’s Purpose for Your Life
The Pursuit by T.C. Stallings has had a dramatic impact on my perspective about pursuing God’s purpose for my life. You may know him from the Kendrick Brothers movies War Room where he is the lead actor of the latter. The great thing about his message in the book is that he clearly outlines the biblical way of pursuing your goals and dreams.
It starts with TC sharing his story and how he transitioned from pursuing his own dreams to becoming an actor.
While he has always been a purpose driven person he chose to pursue God’s purpose for his life; instead of his own which left him depleted and frustrated at not achieving what he wanted.
The next part is a fourteen day devotional with lessons about getting to the where God wants you to be. Each lesson is backed by scripture with questions for personal reflection to help you gravitate towards finding purpose in life.
Unlike the world that says you can be anything you want, you’ll realize that you must pursue what God wants. Many people live in pain and frustration doing things God didn’t design for them to be; yet His plan for them was already written in the books of heaven.
Even so your only job to finding your purpose is to seek God to help you understand what it is. It will be different from everyone else because you’re unique and have a special assignment that you must fulfill.
3. The Dream Giver
The Dream Giver is a publication by Bruce Wilkinson who also authored, “The Prayer of Jabez”. This book starts with a parable about a guy called Ordinary from the Land of Familiar who is pursuing his Big Dream for his life. As he pursues his dream he meets different characters along the way some that encourage him to continue while there are also obstacles that tempt him to quit.
He goes through unexpected situations and experiences internal conflict about what he desires versus what the Dream Giver desires for him. Eventually he gets to the Big Dream which in some ways was not what he actually envisioned.
Bruce Wilkinson then breaks down the many lessons according to scripture about how to pursue the dreams God has put in your heart. Living out God’s purpose for your life is a process that is not based on coincidence but one driven by God Himself.
The Dream Giver will help you understand how to get to your Promised Land and live the life that God intended for you to live. Instead of a plan that centres around your own personal interests God’s purpose centres around the things that matter to him the most and that is the lives of His people.
