3 Enormous Benefits of Mentoring

- in Success

Mentoring is the process of learning skills and being guided through the pursuit of worthwhile goals and objectives. The outcome of mentoring relationships is the impartation of skills and knowledge to the person being mentored. The mentor also gets rewarded by learning about the mentee.

Mentoring skills are important in a world that is constantly crying out for role models and leaders. In recent times there has been a growing concern in generational gaps that need to be closed to ensure that valuable knowledge and skills are passed on from generation to generation.

Mentoring skills are seen in the Bible with Moses and Jethro his father in law, Elijah and Elisha, Jesus and the twelve disciples just to name a few. In modern day society the benefits of mentoring are seen in the marketplace through internships and training of upcoming leaders to take up more responsibility in their professions.

The best mentors are those you can have a personal relationship with, learn from their experiences, and understand how they overcame challenges that they faced to get to where they are today. There are some people you may admire but have no direct access to.

This gap can be bridged by subscribing to their teachings online and purchasing books as there is so much available knowledge now than ever before. So while you may not have the benefit of a personal relationship with a person you admire you can still benefit from their wisdom through these different platforms.

There are many benefits of mentoring I have realized as I have pursued my own life goals. In this post I am going to just point out three of them.

1. Reduces your learning curve

Learning from someone who has already done what you are pursuing in life saves you a lot of time and money if you are open to learn from them. This particularly helps you identify potential mistakes and obstacles that you may encounter along the way.

I not only use the brains I have but all I can borrow.” ~ Woodrow Wilson

Having that knowledge will help you come up with a strategy that will give you the greatest chance to win. Having a mentor does not mean that you will not make any mistakes but it will help you avoid unnecessary mistakes in the process that will save you time, money and energy.

Maybe you have learned the hard way and lost out on time and money. If that is the case start today to look for people that have travelled the path you want to follow.

2. Gives you confidence

When you have a mentor to help you map out a game plan to follow you it gives you a picture of what the outcome will be with a good level of predictability. Knowing what your outcome is likely to look like makes you confident and energizes you to continue running hard at your dreams.

Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed.” ~ Proverbs 15:22

It is when you have no picture of what the future may look like that feelings of insecurity begin to overwhelm you. One of my major goals is to reach millions of people around the world with my blog and inspire them to pursue their goals and realize their potential.

I am constantly learning from other leaders that have done it successfully and applying their lessons. As I have been implementing the skills learned I am also seeing steady progress towards achieving that goal and inspires me a lot to keep putting in the effort.

3. Equips you to teach others

Learning from others and applying what you are taught eventually qualifies you to teach others as well. I have also realized that when you teach you also learn in the process with the benefit of gaining new insights and internalizing the principles you teach.

Knowledge should be constantly passed on to the next generations to ensure continual development in the world. Teaching is your way of giving back what you received yourself and that is how life works. The little that you know can be valuable to someone else even though it may not seem that way to you.

Mentoring skills are valuable and come at a premium in many areas of life. Tap into them to learn and pass on what you learn to others. Find mentors for the different areas of your life and your chances of winning in life will significantly go up.
