There have been times in my life when I have lacked significant motivation to dream and look forward to the future with hope. This was after making a series of mistakes that cost me a lot emotionally and financially. I kinda lost a sense of my life purpose at the time.
I became an example of what some people call one of the living dead – getting up each morning watching life happen but with no real purpose about anything.
Some people are led to commit suicide when their situation escalates to such levels because they see no way out of their misery. That is why I believe it is a blessing to know Jesus Christ and is a huge responsibility for me and you to tell the world about him.
The world is a tough place today compounded by the global economic depression and injustice in many parts of it. It is even tougher when you are not wise and make decisions that will put you at a disadvantage in life.
Thank God for His Son Jesus Christ who died for us on the cross and redeemed our lives from death. While your past mistakes may have cost you your livelihood God is able to redeem them and use them for your good. This is evident with King David who sinned by sleeping with Bathsheba but through her was born the wisest king to ever live.
Samson who allowed himself to be misled by Delilah cut short his own life but also at the time of his death he conquered more people than he did when he lived. Ideally you want your life to be flawless through obedience to God’s Word but because you are human there are times when you will make mistakes and it is good to realize that God can redeem you and still accomplish His plan for your life.
How then can you break from the past and look forward to the future with great expectation. Here are 4 steps that I believe you can follow to step into your life purpose:
1. Ask for God’s forgiveness
God is holy and expects us to be holy, and rightly so. He is also a merciful God who wants the best for you and to help you come into alignment with His purpose for your life. Where you have fallen short confess your sins before Him and He is faithful and just to forgive you.
“He who covers his sins will not prosper, but whoever confesses and forsakes them will have mercy.” ~ Proverbs 28:13
When you have repented be intentional about forsaking your sinful ways and choose to walk according to His commandments. In all fairness we all deserve judgment for sin but God is merciful and wants you to come into a close relationship with Him.
2. Forgive yourself
There are some people who have a hard time forgiving themselves even after God has forgiven them. Do not be one of those people. Such a stance implies that your standard is higher than God’s to qualify you for forgiveness. It is the highest form of arrogance.
If God has forgiven you forgive yourself and move on. You cannot change the past so the only thing you can do is learn from it. Recognize that as a human being you are not flawless and will come short at times. Unforgiveness towards yourself or anyone for that matter does damage to your self-worth and leads to depression and illness as a result.
3. Operate in the present moment
The present moment is all that you have. Yesterday is gone and tomorrow may never come. That is why the Bible also says do stop worrying about tomorrow for tomorrow will worry about itself. What you do today has an influence on what your tomorrow will look like. Recognize that your confidence should not come from your circumstance or what you have, the Spirit of God is your supply.
“You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.” ~ 1 John 4:4
You can decide today that your future will be greater than your present with the confidence that God will be your guide. It does not matter what the past suggests. Joseph in one day was made the governor of Egypt after being taken from prison having remained faithful to God over a period of time.
He can do the same for you and turn your situation around if you remain faithful to Him
4. Affirm God’s promises over your life
God’s promises are the same yesterday, today and forever. It is up to you to appropriate those promises into your life daily. You have to believe that God wants to bless you and be glorified through you. You can write your affirmations down and read them every morning when you get up and before you sleep at night.
Affirmations encourage and increase your level of faith and as you do God will also give you revelation to accomplish the desires of your heart. Hunger and thirst for His righteousness and you will be filled. Do not allow the devil to make your life a living hell. Jesus came that you may have life and to have it in abundance.
Choose today to consciously let go of the past and embrace God’s forgiveness so that you can fulfil His assignment for your life. Stop worrying about the past and believe that God has your future sorted as you learn to trust Him.
