You have the power to determine the direction of your life if you choose to. In the book of Genesis God created man to have dominion over the earth but for a long time I never quite understand how profound that is.
His Word says you are fearfully and wonderfully made implying that you are special and not an ordinary being. God created you in His own image to rule here on earth just as He does in Heaven. There are five things that I believe will determine where you end up in life which I will go through in this post.
1. Knowing what you want
I never fully understood the importance of this until recently when I was reflecting on my own life. I realized that I did not know where I wanted to go with my life and what happened is that I started to just follow almost anyone’s advice. This caused problems for me and the important relationships in my life but at the time I did not understand why.
Having no vision of where you want to be in life is probably the worst experience you can ever have. A blind man who knows where he is going is better off. In addition to knowing what you want also know when you want it.
Not knowing what you want opens you up to being pulled in many different directions leaving you unfulfilled and miserable. Life is a lot better when you have direction so that you can navigate your way around obstacles and other situations when they arise.
2. Being Decisive
The Bible in the book of Revelation 3 tells us to be either hot or cold lest God spits us out. In the book of James we are also told that a double-minded person will not receive anything. When you make a decision to do something stick to it and follow it through with the required action to make it happen.
In spite of the hardships that this life may present to you the power to do something is in your hands. Instead of crying that you cannot find your desired job make a decision to create one that does. Dr. Edwin Louis Cole once said, “The true value of anything is internal, not external.” You have been given abilities that if you make a decision to use them effectively will change the direction of your life.
3. Your Associations
Life is a team sport. To win at the highest level it is important to have people around you. What is more important is having the right people around you. Your closest associations will influence the direction of your life so you must choose them wisely.
If you desire marriage hang around married couples who have the kind of marriage you aspire to. It is that simple though not always apparent to the masses. I have seen this to be true in my own life and others. You become like the people you hang around through the words, gestures and spirit they impart.
Who are your closest associations at the present moment? Are they having a positive or negative influence on your life? Only you know what you need to do about that.
4. Your ability to say no
It has been proven countless times by prominent people in the world that good is the enemy of great. I am sure there are many good things that you can do with your life yet they can also be detrimental. Part of saying yes to many things is wanting to please others at the expense of your own happiness.
It could also be a result of not knowing what you want in life and you are trying different things. This is a good thing for a season until you discover what it is you are truly created for. You become a master by focusing your energies on what makes you fulfilled and gives the biggest return on investment.
For this to happen you must be willing to say no to other good things that will place unnecessary demands on your time, energy and resources. Very few people are multi-talented and can excel at multiple things.
Unless you are one of them find an area where you can excel when you give it everything you have. That is how you leave a mark on the world around you. Say yes to your greatness and no to mediocrity.
5. Level of insight
The Bible contains many promises for you but they will not manifest unless you appropriate them. Make time to meditate on the Word of God to know Him more and experience the depth of His love.
Declare His promises because His Word in His mouth is just as His Word in your mouth. It can alter things in the spiritual and physical realms. Each and every day set aside time for him and He will show you the hidden things that most other people do not.
Just like a close friend who will tell you the intimate things of his heart is God when you develop an intimate relationship with Him. It is your relationship with God that will unlock blessings in all the other areas of your life.
